Cursive-The Power of Connected Writing PART 3

PART 3: Herein we distinguish between block letters (manuscript) and cursive.

The blog entries that follow support the idea that cursive writing can be learned naturally and quickly by children just old enough to be taught to handle a writing instrument or paint brush properly, and that cursive writing has demonstrable positive impacts on literacy and scholarship. Because of the nature of a lot of the literature on teaching writing by hand, much of what is presented below will be about cursive in particular and much will be about handwriting in general, since handwriting in both manuscript style and cursive appears to have clear literacy benefits over just keyboarding, for example. Therefore, the reader will notice a clear effort to avoid conflation of manuscript handwriting with cursive handwriting by singling out which is being discussed per the research or commentary being cited.
